from (almost) somebody to nobody
I was born in Surabaya, 27 years ago. I was raised in a perfect family, and had been inspired much from them.
My father is a great motivator and always has a great vision as well. During my junior and senior high school, I always go to school together with him. While in the car, he told me about the history of IC (integrated circuit), from the invention of electrode tube, diode, transistor, to the IC. On other day, he told me the history of telecommunication technology, as well as the future of that technology. He repeated the topic on IC and telecommunication technology three times a week, while on the other three days he told me the reason why an entrepreneur is needed in Indonesia. Believe it or not, I get that lesson since I was in the junior high school. And here I am, an electrical engineer (major on telecommunication) and an (not-succeed yet) entrepreneur.
My mother, she is very patient. My whole life, I have only seen my mother upset once, i.e. when her car being hit by someone, and the person blamed my mother for the incident. There is no other word to describe her patience, even my friend that had never met her before said that her patience can be revealed just through her voice. He made that conclusion after only 10 seconds of conversation with my mother through the phone. My mother has an excellent empathy as well. It is manifested through the way she speak, acts and treats people. Too bad, I am not having her attribute much.
I was almost ‘somebody’ (or at least I thought so)
Almost ten years ago, a friend of mine told me that I had almost everything in my hands. I had an excellent academic achievement, good organizational activities and also good interpersonal skill. Some of my achievements during my ‘golden ages’ are:
- I was always ranked top three in class (most cases ranked first), in one of the best senior high school in Indonesia.
- At the second grade, I was ranked first and created quite a big gap in total score to the second rank. The gap was quite big, that even if I exclude the score of one subject, I would still get the first rank!
- At the third grade, I was awarded second-best for national model students 1997.
- During the same year I was ranked 14th in national qualification for International Physic Olympiad team. It’s quite good, due to the fact that I almost did no preparation at all.
- I got a perfect final score for one of my subjects in undergraduate program, the score was 100 from 100-scale. And for some other subjects I’ve got a final score of more than 95 (in 100-scale).
- I was elected as the chairman for departmental student body for undergraduate program.
- I was graduated cum laude.
But I am currently ‘nobody’
I consider those achievements were only my pasts. The ‘golden ages’ are no longer here, and I am currently nobody.
As soon as I had graduated in 2002, I chose to be an entrepreneur. We were a team of five, and all of us are engineers. We decided to focus ourselves in mobile application technology. We’ve done our best, and always tried our best to work smart. But the process was always not easy for us. And as a result, the company’s performance is not good.
In early 2007, I started my second company with my other friends. It was a retail business in Bandung. The two businesses are totally different business, with different problems and challenges. We are in a tight competition, and unfortunately our competitors are all powerful players, have much larger capitals and most of them had been operated for several decades.
I am running two companies at the moment, and none of them in a good performance. But I have a faith, that if we work seriously and always pray to God, it is impossible that God will ignore us.
